*A very special excursion, designed with a lot of thought and care.
- The tour includes a series of stops on the Machairas mountains, offering a combination of tradition, and breath-taking panoramic views.
- Our first stop is a tour of traditional cheese-making on a family-owned farm, starting with a warm welcome by the owner herself and a look at the lush farmland and animals that provide the milk. From milking the animals to the cheese-making process, including curdling, heating and molding, you will have the chance to observe every step of the process. Then you will sample fresh halloumi - soft, salty, delicate, creamy Anari with carob honey along with local bread and olives. This tour combines delicious flavors, local culture, and hands-on learning for an unforgettable culinary adventure.
- Ktima Christoudia is a family-run winery located in the village of Kato Drys, in the Larnaca district of Cyprus. Their “new” winery building was constructed between 2008 and 2012, combining modern production facilities with traditional touches. The winery is part of the “wine-villages” route in the Larnaca / Lefkosia wine region. They grow Cypriot indigenous varieties and also engage in modern vinification and aging practices (e.g. stainless steel tanks, oak cellars). There we will have wine tasting
- Then we visit an exhibition dedicated to Lefkara Lace (also known as Lefkaritika)—for example at the Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO or in the village of Pano Lefkara itself—here’s what you can expect to see and experience: Historic examples of Lefkara lace pieces: Beautiful finished textiles such as tablecloths, napkins, altar cloths and show-pieces made in the traditional three colours (white, brown/beige & ecru) with motifs including geometric patterns, floral and nature-inspired designs.
- Details of technique: You’ll see close-up views (or sometimes live demonstrations) of how the lace is made — the drawn-thread work, satin stitch fillings, needlepoint edgings, the “reverse equals front” perfection where both sides of the piece look virtually the same.
- Tools, materials and process: Exhibits of the linen fabric (“Irish linen” is often used), the fine thread (traditionally French thread is mentioned) and the small pillows/frames used in making the lace.
- Then, we will visit Lefkara - voted as one of the 30 most beautiful towns in Europe - where we will visit one of the many famous Lace and Silver workshops, and hear a few words about the art of lace making. Then we will take a short walk through the fairy tale like paved roads and alleys. It is also known that one of the visitors was Leonardo da Vinci himself.
- After our lovely walk around Lefkara, we will head to Fikardou, a village dating back to the 16th century, connected to Sir Thomas Fikardo. Later abandoned, in 1978, the Department of Antiquities declared the entire village as an “Ancient Monument” and has since fully repaired and restored Fikardou to its original state. Today the entire village is a living museum and is on the Tentative List of UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
- Finishing our tour, on our way out of Fikardou, we will visit a traditional tavern where you will have a selection of local dishes - served in the traditional Cypriot meze style - with options included for vegeterians!
